Debt + Income replacement + Mortgage + Education, netted against the cover you already hold and your liquid savings — the same transparent method the Hundred Summers app's Protection tab uses, with nothing hidden behind a quote form. Your figures never leave your browser.

DIME answers the only question that matters: what would your death cost the people who depend on you? Clearing debts and the mortgage keeps the house; income replacement (commonly 10 years) buys the family time; education costs carry each child through. Netting off existing cover matters more than people expect — death-in-service at 4× salary quietly covers a big slice of many gaps.
It is a rule of thumb, stated as one. Two refinements cost nothing: write policies in trust (outside your estate for inheritance tax, paid without probate), and re-run the number when life changes — each child, each move. The full Hundred Summers plan carries recorded policies through your whole projection, and its survivor what-if shows the payout actually working for the family that receives it.
