What DIME captures — and what it is

DIME answers the only question that matters: what would your death cost the people who depend on you? Clearing debts and the mortgage keeps the house; income replacement (commonly 10 years) buys the family time; education costs carry each child through. Netting off existing cover matters more than people expect — death-in-service at 4× salary quietly covers a big slice of many gaps.

It is a rule of thumb, stated as one. Two refinements cost nothing: write policies in trust (outside your estate for inheritance tax, paid without probate), and re-run the number when life changes — each child, each move. The full Hundred Summers plan carries recorded policies through your whole projection, and its survivor what-if shows the payout actually working for the family that receives it.

Education, not advice. Premiums depend on age, health and occupation - a protection specialist quotes those; this page sizes the need. For a personal recommendation speak to an FCA-regulated financial adviser; free impartial guidance is available from MoneyHelper.
