The next question
What would a serious illness cost us? →Critical illness cover calculator
Or answer it with everything else: the full Hundred Summers plan connects your pay, pensions, savings, property, tax and spending year by year, and stress-tests them across 500 simulated market histories.

- Income protection, critical illness or life cover: which risk are you actually insuring? →Three policies, three different events. The population odds of each before retirement, what each policy pays and when, why long absence is the risk most households are least covered for, and how sick pay and savings set the deferred period.
What DIME captures, and what it is
DIME answers the only question that matters: what would your death cost the people who depend on you? Clearing debts and the mortgage keeps the house; income replacement (commonly 10 years) buys the family time; education costs carry each child through. Netting off existing cover matters more than people expect: death-in-service at 4× salary quietly covers a big slice of many gaps.
It is a rule of thumb, stated as one. Two refinements cost nothing: write policies in trust (outside your estate for inheritance tax, paid without probate), and re-run the number when life changes: each child, each move. The full Hundred Summers plan carries recorded policies through your whole projection, and its survivor what-if shows the payout actually working for the family that receives it.
